🎊Historic rugby fixture marks triumphant return after 3-year break!
After more than 3 years without rugby, on Tuesday 18 March, our recently formed rugby team marked a long-awaited return to the sport by hosting Beacon Academy in their first fixture of the year. Months of dedication from Mr. Stidder and Mr. Coleman had prepared the squad for this moment, and the excitement was electric. The rugby posts, once forgotten and buried in the bushes stood tall once again, while freshly painted lines on the pitch marked the return of a long-awaited tradition. This was more than just a match; it was a testament to resilience, dedication, and the re-kindling of Uplands' rugby spirit.
Ultimately, the game ended 66-16 in favour of Beacon Academy, but the score line told only part of the story. Both teams displayed incredible character, commitment, and teamwork, making this fixture a true showcase of the MARK values. The dedication behind the scenes, from coaches, players and supporters was evident in every moment, proving that the return of rugby to Uplands was well worth the wait.
👏Congratulations to all the players for their dedication, effort, and sportsmanship. From the first whistle to the last, you gave everything, setting a high standard for future matches!

On Tuesday 18 March, our Year 8 cohort had an unforgettable experience with some incredible creatures, thanks to our friends at ZooLab.
From holding an African snail and a cockroach, to coming face-to face with a corn snake, students had the chance to step outside their comfort zones and engage in hands on learning. The Zoolab workshop, designed to complement the curriculum, gave students fascinating insights into the rainforest ecosystem, the unique adaptations of its inhabitants, and the growing threats to their survival.
Miss. Huxford, Head of Geography, shared her thoughts on the day, 'It's always a highlight for me, watching the students flourish and engage in a different type of classroom setting. It was lovely to watch so many students face some of their fears, and hear them talking about the session for the rest of the day. Hopefully it is an experience that will stay with them for many years!'

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming a speaker from Brighton and Sussex Medical School, who provided our students with valuable insights into the world of medicine.
Our Year 9 assembly took students through a fascinating hypothetical case, tracing a patient's journey through the NHS and highlighting the many specialist roles involved in their care. The session opened students' eyes to the wide range of careers that contribute to patient well-being.
Following this, 15 aspiring medical students from Year 10 & 11 participated in an interactive workshop, where they explored the processes behind medical assessment, treatment, and aftercare. They also gained practical knowledge about pathways into medical training at Brighton & Sussex Medical School.

🌍 Sixth Form Geographers explore the wonders of Iceland 💫
At the end of last term, a group of Uplands Academy and Beacon Academy Year 13 A Level Geography students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Iceland, where they explored the island’s stunning geographical features. The trip proved to be truly epic, with breathtaking landscapes and geological wonders around every corner.
Highlights included witnessing the Northern Lights (not once, but three times!), marvelling at Geysir’s hot water spouts, visiting iconic waterfalls and a state-of-the-art simulated flyover across the island.

The Easter holidays will see the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme up and running again. A range of clubs providing activities and food during the school holidays, FREE for children on benefit-related free school meals.
There is a great choice of clubs spread across multiple venues in East Sussex. Each provides a free healthy meal and a wonderful opportunity for children and young people to enjoy a range of activities, including sport, dance, animation and crafts.

📚✨ Celebrating World Book Day (UK & Ireland)
Today, students had the exciting opportunity to take part in a number of activities led by Mrs. Cantrell, Teacher of English, to celebrate the magic of books!
One of the highlights of the day was the 'Character Quest', where staff were each assigned the name of a famous literary character. Students enjoyed the challenge of tracking them all down during break and lunch!
We also hosted a story time session at break featuring The Hobbit, and a Book Quiz at lunchtime, where students put their literary knowledge to the test.
Meanwhile, Key Stage 3 English lessons have all been about Flash Fiction, encouraging students to explore the art of powerful storytelling in just a few words.
The English department has also been running a Design a National Book Token competition. A huge thank you to everyone who has entered so far. If you havn't had a chance yet, there's still time! Speak to Mrs. Cantrell for more details.
To inspire even more reading, every student has received access to a virtual library filled with fantastic book recommendations, including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, White Teeth, and The Kite Runner.
And of course, no World Book Day celebration would be complete without a £1 book token! Students can swap theirs for a free World Book Day book at participating retailers.
Winners of the competitions will be announced in the Student Bulletin.

✨On Monday 3 March, selected Year 10 students attended a careers fair run by Careers Hub East Sussex at the Kings Centre in Eastbourne. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students to explore a wide range of careers, gain insight into different job roles, and understand the skills needed in various industries.
Students also got hands on experience with industry specific technology and equipment, making the day both educational and interactive. The careers fair was attended by exhibitors from local colleges, apprenticeship providers and training organisations all offering valuable careers advice and guidance.
Thank you to Mrs. Harrison, Head of Personal Development for organising this enriching experience for our students.

🏐On Thursday 27 February, Uplands proudly hosted the annual primary schools netball competition! Four of our local schools showcased exceptional skill and teamwork as they competed for a spot in the North Wealden round.
Ms. Lewis, North Wealden School Games Organiser commented, 'A huge shoutout to our fantastic sports leaders, who did a brilliant job umpiring and keeping track of the scores. Special recognition goes to our GCSE PE umpires, Darcy and Mylo, for their professionalism and sports knowledge. A huge thank you to Sienna and Dulcie for running an incredibly organised score table - your efforts didn't go unnoticed!'

Following our ungraded Ofsted inspection in January 2025, we are delighted to share the report.
This was an ungraded inspection designed to assess whether our school continues to provide a ‘Good’ standard of education. After a rigorous two-day inspection, Ofsted concluded that “Uplands Academy has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection”.
Throughout the two days, our students, staff and our wider school community consistently demonstrated the strengths of our school. We are proud of the positive feedback we received, particularly the following statements from the report:
“The school fosters a keen sense of community where manners, acceptance, respect and kindness are central to its ethos. Pupils enjoy school and feel safe. Their learning is supported by strong relationships and constructive guidance. The school has high expectations for behaviour and engagement. Pupils appreciate the way that their teachers know them well and this helps to maintain a focused classroom atmosphere. Behaviour is largely positive, and low-level disruption is addressed effectively.”
These comments affirm our vision which is to provide high-quality education and creating an environment in which all students can thrive. Our core values of Manners, Acceptance, Respect and Kindness underpin everything we do, and it is heartening to see these reflected in the inspection findings.

On Monday 24 February, our Year 9 students had the incredible opportunity to hear Mr. John Hajdu share his powerful firsthand experiences of the Holocaust, the Russian occupation of Hungary, and his subsequent escape to the West.
This talk was held in connection with Holocaust Memorial Day, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and also tied into the Year 9 History curriculum on the Changing Nature of Warfare.
Mr Hajdu's story gave students a deeper, more personal understanding of the Holocaust, reinforcing their classroom learning. Mrs. Underdown, Head of History, praised the students, saying 'Year 9 were superbly behaved and demonstrated excellent MARK values throughout. They engaged fully with the talk, asking fantastic questions that showed a genuine interest in both the topic and Mr. Hajdu's story. It was a brilliant experience and one that student's got a great deal out of'.
