🩷Mental Health Awareness Week: 12 - 18 May 2025🩷
This week, we're taking time as a school community to shine a light on the importance of mental health.
The theme this year celebrates the power and importance of 'community'.
Here at Uplands, we believe being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense purpose.
We are proud to provide a strong support network for our students, including:
✅ dedicated non-teaching staff to support each year group.
✅ a highly experienced SEND department.
✅ a Senior Mental Health Lead and two Mental Health First Aiders.
Each morning this week, students are exploring mental health topics during Personal Development Time, and accessing helpful resources to build understanding and resilience.

🏏Cricket season off to a flying start!
On Wednesday 7 May, our U15 cricket team travelled to Beacon Academy for their first match of the season. Beacon batted first, scoring 66 runs in 14 overs. Fred was a standout with the ball, claiming wicket, and bowling with real pace to keep Beacon on the back foot. The entire Uplands team bowled and fielded brilliantly, keeping the pressure on and limiting the runs.
Opening the batting for Uplands, Noah was unfortunately caught early after some sharp fielding from Beacon. However, the momentum quickly shifted as Alby took control, scoring over 20 runs, including a spectacular six-slog-swept over the boundary. Frazer added valuable runs before being dismissed LBW but had already made a strong impression with his all-round performance. George contributed a steady 15+ runs, helping to anchor the innings.
Uplands chased down the target confidently, reaching 67 in just 8 overs - securing a convincing win with 6 overs to spare.
👏An excellent team performance from the boys and a great way to kick off the cricket season. Well done Ben, Frazer, George, Alby, Fred, Tom, Noah, Sebbie & Tom (Year 10) and Charlie, Luke and Jonathan (Year 9).

✨Sports Leaders inspiring the next generation.
Yesterday, after months of preparation, our incredible Sports Leaders brought their dynamic vision to life at Ticehurst and Flimwell C of E primary school .
The aim? To give potential future Uplands students a taste of the exciting sports opportunities that await them. And they did just that - leading two high-energy Athletics sessions for Year 3 to 6 with enthusiasm, professionalism, and confidence.
It was a fantastic afternoon enjoyed by all. Our leaders really made their MARK, demonstrating outstanding leadership and a passion for sport that shone through every activity.
We were delighted to receive this kind message from the primary school:
'Thank you so much for coming. The children loved it and we were so impressed with your young people's approach to working with our children. They are a credit to your school. The children want to know if you will come back and do that again, please?'

🏃♀️On 29 April, our Year 9 Athletics team travelled to Lewes to compete against several other schools in a variety of track and field events. It was a fantastic afternoon marked by outstanding performances and, most importantly, an incredible display of team spirit and camaraderie among the athletes.
Mr. Doe commented, 'The Year 9 students were an absolute credit to the school. There was a genuine sense of community as they motivated and encouraged each other in every event. The afternoon wasn't just about winning - it was about the students showing their character, resilience, and sportsmanship. Mr. Stidder and I were incredibly proud of how they conducted themselves. We saw some truly heartwarming moments, from students helping each other across the finish line, to cheering from the sidelines and helping teammates overcome nerves to perform at their best.'
🥇We were also very fortunate to celebrate some impressive victories on the day. Daniel claimed first place in both the 100m and long jump events with ease. Remarkably, some event officials even suggested he may have broken the Year 9 boys' 100m record. Sienna delivered a stunning performance in the 200m event, running the bend with confidence and bursting down the straight to take the win. Florence tied for first place in the long jump alongside an athlete from Priory School, securing the final win of the afternoon.
A huge congratulations to everyone who took part, including Florence, Sienna, Ellie, Josie, Sadie, Edie, Alanna, James, Bobby, Daniel, Will and Charlie. Your commitment, teamwork, and performances made us all proud.

🎤Outstanding Public Speaking at Uplands Academy.
On 28 April, four talented Year 10 students took to the stage as finalists in our school Speakers Trust public speaking competition. They earned their place after impressing judges at the January workshop, where twenty five Year 10 students took part.
Each finalist delivered a powerful two minute speech on a topic of their choice, presenting to an audience of Year 7 students and a judging panel that included Mr. Connor (Headteacher), Mr. Richards (Deputy Headteacher) and Dr. Jane Austin (Chair of Governors).
The standard was extremely high, with topics ranging from Friendship, Listening and Grief, Race and Equality and Fast Food. After careful consideration, the judges crowned Amelie, for her speech on Discrimination and Henry for his inspiring speech on Kindness as our winners.
Dr. Jane Austin praised the students, saying: 'The confidence, clarity, and passion shown by all the speakers was truly impressive. It's a joy to see such articulate young voices tackling important topics with maturity and conviction'.
Amelie and Henry will now represent Uplands Academy in the regional final at the Brighton Dome in June - best of luck to them both!

We are incredibly proud to have been part of the Wadhurst VE Day Remembrance Ceremony at the War Memorial this morning.
Our Headteacher, Mr. Connor, along with six student representatives, joined local primary schools and community groups to mark 80 years since victory in Europe, a turning point in history that secured our freedom.
A huge thank you to our students, Sam, Anthonia, Julia and Henry (Year 8 ) and Amelie and Lily (Year 10) for representing our school with such dignity and respect.
Back at school, students and staff also observed a two minute silence at 11am to mark this important day of remembrance.
To continue the commemoration, Wadhurst Commemoration Hall & Field will host a community event in the hall from 7:30pm this evening, followed by a Beacon Lighting Ceremony on the field at 9:30pm.

✨We're delighted to announce that our recent Easter fundraiser raised an incredible £460!
A heartfelt thank you goes to our fantastic Student Leadership Council for organising such a fun and successful event. We're also grateful to everyone who came along - your enthusiasm and generosity will make a real difference to our school.
The Student Leadership Council will soon be voting on how to use the funds, so stay tuned for updates.

**Transport update: Highgate Hill closure**
We have been advised by Hams Travel of the following updates:
The commencement of phase two has been scheduled for the 9th May 2025 due to delays in the works on Cranbrook Road:
📍Hams Travel U1 service: main route runs from Johns Cross to Uplands via A21 – an additional service bus starting from The Moore to Uplands will be available.
📍Hams Travel U2 service: main route begins at Hawkhurst British Legion and heads to Uplands as normal. Students waiting at the bottom of Highgate Hill bus stop will need to walk up to either the British Legion OR The Moore. Signage should be highlighted at these stops with the relevant information.
A communication was sent out last week via Edulink to all parents, carers and students, however please do share this with anyone that you know may be affected. Thank you.

🥳🏃Huge congratulations to three of our incredible members of staff for their recent marathon successes!
Mr. Connor, Headteacher completed the London Marathon on Sunday 27th April in an impressive 4:41. Mr. Stidder, PE Teacher also took on the event in the challenging heat, crossing the finish line in a fantastic 3:37.
A big shoutout to Mr. Gilbey, Assistant Headteacher, who smashed the Paris Marathon on Sunday 13th April with an amazing time of 3:18.

A big thank you to our Year 9 Student Ambassadors for their excellent support of our Year 5 Open Morning Tours this week, where we welcomed prospective parents and students from our main feeder primary schools.
These students volunteer to represent our school at key school events, guiding prospective parents and students on tour and providing engaging and informative advice whilst also putting our young visitors at ease.
We have been delighted to receive exceptionally positive feedback from our visitors regarding our Student Ambassadors, who have been described this week as 'extremely polite, knowledgeable and enthusiastic', and a 'credit to the school'.
