Historic rugby fixture marks triumphant return after 3-year break

Published 18/03/2025

After more than 3 years without rugby, on Tuesday 18th March, Uplands Academy marked a long-awaited return to the sport by hosting Beacon Academy in their first fixture of the year. Months of dedication from Mr. Stidder and Mr. Coleman had prepared the squad for this moment, and the excitement was electric. The rugby posts, once forgotten and buried in the bushes stood tall once again, while freshly painted lines on the pitch marked the return of a long-awaited tradition. This was more than just a match; it was a testament to resilience, dedication, and the re-kindling of Uplands' rugby spirit.

From the opening whistle, Uplands set the tone with fierce tackling and aggressive forward play. Their determination was evident as they broke through Beacon's defensive line time and time again, charging forward with relentless energy. The home side dominated the breakdowns, securing quick ball and launching fast, fluid attacks that kept their opponents on the back foot.

However, Beacon Academy was not to be outmatched. Despite Uplands' early pressure, Beacon's defensive structure held firm, and their tackling was sharp and precise. As the game progressed, the visitors began to show their dominance, not just in defence, but also attack.

Beacon struck first, putting points on the board early and applying pressure. But the Uplands players were determined to leave their mark. A moment of brilliance from Noah, executing a dazzling behind the back pass, found Sebi in space. With a burst of speed, he crossed the try line to score Upland's first home try in three years - an unforgettable moment that sent parents, teachers, and students into a frenzy of celebration.

The momentum continued to build as Uplands executed a beautifully coordinated set play. Crisp, precise passing opened the door for Alfred, who weaved his way through Beacon's defence, leaving defenders trailing as he stormed over for Uplands second try of the match.

Ultimately, the game ended 66-16 in favour of Beacon Academy, but the scoreline told only part of the story. Both teams displayed incredible character, commitment, and teamwork, making this fixture a true showcase of the MARK values. The dedication behind the scenes, from coaches, players and supporters was evident in every moment, proving that the return of rugby to Uplands Academy was well worth the wait.

A special thank you to Beacon Academy's rugby coach, Mr. Trendell, for refereeing the match and for his outstanding work in growing the sport at Beacon. Huge appreciation also goes to parents, teachers, and students who turned up in incredible numbers, creating an electric atmosphere.

Most importantly, congratulations to all the players for their dedication, effort, and sportsmanship. From the first whistle to the last, you gave everything, setting a high standard for future matches. The return of rugby at Uplands is just the beginning - WE ARE UPLANDS!
