Geography
Intent
Our geography curriculum inspires curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; the formation and use of landscapes so that students can begin to answer some of the questions they may have about the world. Our curriculum supports our students to become knowledgeable and responsible global citizens.
We teach geography as a multi-faceted discipline that combines the analysis of social questions, environmental issues, and modern real-world solutions. As geographers, we investigate interactions between the human and physical environments such as the causes and impacts of climate change. We equip our learners with empathy of other cultures through the study of real-world examples.
We also ensure our students develop technical geographical skills including collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways. Our young geographers love learning about geography by gaining knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also through fieldwork and educational visits.
How our subject contributes to students’ personal development
Our curriculum contributes to students’ personal development through studying migration and the many ways in which our country connects to other countries around the world. We undertake case studies of Africa, India, China and Haiti to address common preconceptions and misconceptions and to encourage students to develop a sense of fascination and appreciation of other people and the world around us.
