Mathematics
Intent
The maths curriculum at Uplands is designed to ensure that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge they will need in the future whether they go on to work in business, technology, the public sector or creative industries. Through the curriculum, they gain knowledge of mathematical concepts, terms and methods, and confidence in applying their skills to a variety of problems so that they build resilience and autonomy when faced with challenges.
Alongside their maths knowledge, our students develop social and communication skills as they learn to articulate their thoughts and work through problems logically. They also develop independence by working their way through challenges and practising methods until they can apply them confidently.
We intend for our students to see the broad range of real-world applications of maths and the various people who have made advancements in maths. In doing so, we contribute to students’ understanding and tolerance of others and challenge stereotypes and misconceptions that they may hold.
How our subject contributes to students’ personal development
Pair work and mini whiteboards ensure that all students' contributions are fostered and valued.
An emphasis on discussion of methods with equanimity given to student responses encourages respect amongst students.
The teaching of key vocabulary is embedded in each lesson to support literacy and understanding of mathematical concepts.
Links are made to careers that would use the topic being studied to challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations.
