Modern Foreign Languages
Intent
Learning other languages helps our brains to develop and grow stronger. Taking on the mental challenge of learning new vocabulary and grammar opens our minds to a wider world and enables us to take part in international events in the future. At Uplands, students are given a strong foundation in French and Spanish which opens many doors for their future and prepares them to continue developing their language skills in the future.
Through our language curriculum, our students are given the knowledge they need to read, write, speak and understand a range of short texts and extracts with confidence. They begin to understand some of the similarities and differences between life here and in other countries and become curious about differences in film, music, food and society.
Our students frequently practise speaking in another language. They learn the essential building blocks for communication such as greeting someone, asking and answering questions and finding out information.
How our subject contributes to personal development
Learning languages has many cognitive benefits, including memory and critical thinking. Learning a language supports students’ expanding vocabulary and knowledge of grammar. Through learning languages, our students develop an awareness of patterns and links with other languages.
Our curriculum also ensures students gain knowledge and understanding of different cultures. This helps students to develop empathy, acceptance and respect for others. The curriculum supports students to gain a global perspective, helping them to be more open-minded and culturally sensitive.
Through languages, our students develop their communication skills by developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Working in partnerships through speaking tasks also supports students’ ability to collaborate with others and interact socially.
In terms of careers, learning a language can provide many opportunities for students in an increasingly globalised world.
