Religious Studies
Intent
Our Religious Education curriculum is designed to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of diverse religious beliefs and practices that shape many people’s lives across the world. The lessons support students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through discussion and individual exploration of ideas and beliefs.
We promote acceptance and respect as key values as our students increase their knowledge of the six major religions alongside non-religious worldviews. We have designed a curriculum in line with the East Sussex Agreed Syllabus for RE to ensure the content is broad and balanced and ensures our students are knowledgeable about faith and belief in the 21st century.
Our students learn about different beliefs in order to understand more about the world and specifically the changing nature of the UK. As our school is in an area is less diverse than other parts of the country and the world, we aim to ensure our students gain knowledge about different cultures by introducing them to other people’s traditions, beliefs, feelings and values. Students learn about the six major religions separately before exploring the relationships between them through comparison.
Teaching and learning in the RE curriculum includes three central concepts: making sense of the religions and beliefs; understanding the impact of these beliefs in people’s lives; making connections to their own lives and experiences in the wider world.
How our subject contributes to personal development
Through learning more about how others, the RE curriculum supports students’ personal development through providing them with opportunities to develop their own understanding of the world and their role within their community.
We explore broad concepts such as spirituality and we encourage our students to reflect on their own beliefs
Enrichment Opportunities and Wider Support
Students in Religious Studies benefit from an array of study resources and revision aids, including online study platforms, key terms and sources of religious authority banks, examiners reports and exam paper training, revision and study skills sessions. Plans are in development for external trips to enhance students understanding of the world around them.
