Science
Intent
We believe Science is for all. Science does not ‘belong’ to a group of people in white lab coats.
Science seeks to explain the ‘real-world’. We link our, sometimes abstract, concepts to experiences that pupils know and see. We use practical science to root understanding in concrete observations.
We teach Science in a spiral curriculum so we can revisit key ideas to build strong schema and support knowledge retention.
‘Working scientifically is the sum of all the activities that scientists do’. For example, asking questions, planning investigations, making predictions, gathering and analysing data. We carefully consider working scientifically skills and explicitly teach these as a separate strand in Y7-9.
Science at Uplands aims to give all our students a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help students think scientifically and support them through life.
How our subject contributes to personal development
Science underpins technological advances that effect all of humankind. Our students gain both an understanding of scientific processes and an understanding of the uses and implications of science.
Students are asked to consider ethical and moral questions, and to consider how scientific knowledge crosses all nations and therefore links humans together.
Our students are introduced to a wide variety of careers which draw upon scientific study so that they appreciate the role of science in the world beyond Uplands.
