Art & Design and Photography
Intent
Through our art and photography curriculum, all of our students have the opportunity to learn how to see with an artistic eye and develop their technical knowledge and skills in creating art.
By gaining knowledge of masterful and pioneering artists, including William Turner, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo, as well as contemporary artists from a range of different cultural backgrounds, our students learn to appreciate the ways that artists have captured the human experience throughout the centuries and in today’s world.
We introduce our students to art from other cultures and take them on a journey through different art movements including realism, expressionism, cubism, pop art, installation art, environmental art and street art.
Our students begin by developing skills in drawing and working with a range of media before responding to a stimulus and understanding how to convey meanings through shape, form and colour. Each of our students is nurtured to develop their imagination and creativity through their own work and to appreciate the work of others.
How art and photography contribute to students’ personal development
We explore identity through artistic expression and consider religious symbolism, cultural traditions and the things that make us uniquely ourselves.
Through learning about a wide range of diverse artists, our students develop acceptance of others and an appreciation of different cultures.
We hope that every Uplands student will continue to appreciate art and photography long after they have completed their formal art education.
